Annual Report SWRC 2006
Purpose of Report
Summarise Club activities and achievements in 2006 for reference by SWRC members and potential members
Committee Activity
Elected Committee members met 6 times in 2006 to agree club activities and respond to needs as required. The AGM is an opportunity to thank all Committee members for giving their time for the benefit of the Club at Committee meetings and in fulfilling their individual responsibilities.
Club Runs

The “backbone” of club activities remains our very well attended Saturday morning Club Runs. Over the year, numbers have swelled, and together with new members that we hope will join us regularly after the very successful Invitation Ride on November 11th, we hope to have 3 permanent groups instead of 2 currently.
• Hardriders
• Sportive
• Social
Adding up riders on all the groups on the Invitation Ride, we calculate that we had 87 riders in total, including the Leisure Group led by Roger Jackaman and the Mountain Bike Group led by Raymond Hallam.
All Road Groups start from Cobham (or Betchworth on the first Saturday of each month). We continue to benefit from the amazing knowledge of our Runs Leaders (Patrick Cangley, Dave Pinder, Sabin Gaztelua, Mark Packman, etc) concerning the side roads and lanes of Surrey, Sussex and Kent, giving us access to some of the best cycle rides in the UK. Only the best “tea stops” are chosen, where we can be sure of a warm welcome and good food. After using up a lot of energy there is no need to feel guilty about tucking into cakes in “cyclist sized” portions.
Thank you to Patrick Cangley who issues a Club Runs List twice per year and weekly Club run route maps and altitude profiles.
Time Trials
2006 has been a difficult year for Time Trials in some ways, but a very good year in others. Due to unavoidable non-cycling commitments, we did not have a Time Trial Secretary for most of the year, and this inevitably led to problems, forcing us to cancel some events. However, the good news is that thankfully Simon Neave stepped into the gap and has volunteered to stand for election for 2007, while continuing to handle Club Kit.
More great news was that 3 Club Time Trial Records were broken this year as follows:
• Men’s 50 miles: Paul Alderson did a 1.53.35 breaking the previous record set in 1994 by 23 seconds
• Men’s 100 miles: Paul Alderson did a 3.57.21 smashing the previous record set in 1984 by 6 minutes 23 seconds
• Women’s 25 miles: Ruth Hutton did a 59.50 breaking her own record set in 2005, getting under the hour and winning her TT event
This year there was a very close finish between Colin Parkinson and Jonathan Thomas for the winner of the Veteran’s Time Trial Championship. For this cup, 10 & 25 mile times are adjusted according to the age of the competitor. This year, Colin won by just .05 mph.
It seems unlikely that our Men’s 10 & 25 mile records will be beaten for some time, but that is because they were set by ex SWRC member and now Britain’s top professional Road Racer, Roger Hammond.
Road Races
SWRC have an active and successful group of Road Racers including Bill McCombe, Keith Garbutt, Eric Palmer, Alan Clarke, Dave Worsfold, Cliff Dent, Pete Sturton, Dudley Samuels, Jonathan Thomas, Alan Parkinson, Andy McKie, Barry Harwood, and Andy Hicks - sorry if I missed anyone. These members recorded numerous podium places in 2006 including:
• Andy Hicks won his age group in the Southern Counties White Jersey Series with 4 wins and 3 other top 3 places in the 11 race series
• Andy Hicks was second in his age group in the Percy Stallard Series with 2 wins and a 2nd place in the 10 race series covering the whole of the UK
• Andy McKie won one of the Surrey League 3rd Category races, had several additional good places and is now a 2nd Category rider
• Keith Garbutt was 2nd in his age group in the SWRC Surrey League Road Race,
Road Race Secretary Mark Packman reports growing participation in LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists) events, as well as participation in Surrey League events. The SWRC successfully organised 2 races in 2006: President Geoff Redhead promoted the SWRC “Follicly Challenged” Road Races in July, and Ted Collins promoted 2 Surrey League races in early October.
Club Events
The Club had a full calendar of events including:
• Club Spring Cyclosportive March 4th thanks to Geoff Redhead, Bob Maylin, Simon Neave, Brian Amsdell and many others
• Calshott “Track Day” on March 24th - thanks to Roger Jackaman
• Training Weekend in April with overnight stay in Southsea
• Late April early May 1 week trip to Majorca thanks to Gary Smith (alias our sponsor “Evans Cycles”). Several wives came along again this year and the girls walking group had a great time
• Club Randonee on May 13th thanks to Tony & Irene Sayers, David & Dee Jordan, Jane Geddes, Gary Smith, Ant Frend, and Patrick Cangley
• As referred to already, Geoff Redhead organised 2 races at Ellen’s Green. These are the annual Follicly Challenged Road Races this year forming part of the prestigious White Jersey series and including the Region 9 Category D,E,F,G,H Road race Championships
• Gran Fondo Pinarello trip to Italy in mid July, thanks to Dudley Samuels
• 2 separate weeks in France, one combined with watching the Tour de France and the other culminating in participation in a local Randonee
• 100 mile “Century” ride thanks to Patrick Cangley
• As referred to above, thanks to Ted Collins for organising the 2 Surrey League Road races on October 1st sponsored by the SWRC
• Trip to Majorca in November - thanks to Ant Frend (Ant knows the good rides and good food around Palma this ride is now known as the “Tapas Tour”)
Track
Thanks to Roger Jackaman for organising another very enjoyable trip to the Calshott track near Southampton in March. Anyone getting the chance to ride this track knows that it is an unforgettable experience the phrase “wall of death” come to mind.

Mountain Biking
A growing band of SWRC Mountain bikers meet regularly at Westcott on Sunday mornings. In addition, Jane Geddes and Raymond Hallam did a Bike Challenge in Poland, and a Six Day Stage Race in Poland. Raymond also did the Three Peaks Cyclocross Race, some Merida 100k MTB races (finishing in the top 10 Vets) and took 3rd place in the first round of the Marin Winter Series.

Cyclosportives
SWRC members did very well in this rapidly growing section of cycling activity. Trevor Lenthall was highly placed in the SWRC Randonee, and had excellent times in the Wessex 3 day, the fearsome Marmotte, the Tour of Surrey Hills and 2nd place in the Dartmoor Devil. Graham Collins was one of only 3 riders awarded Golden Rider status in the international UCI Golden Bike series, for having participated in all UCI Cyclosportive events in countries all over the world including S Africa, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France & Belgium. Andy McKie and Ralph Swallow also completed the Marmotte and Mark Williams did the Dragon Ride in S Wales.
New Members
We extended a very warm welcome to 14 new members in 2006 to date, but expect this number to increase as a result of the November Invitation Ride. We currently have 110 members
Social Events
• This year we have had 2 SWRC Lunch & Trophy Presentations February 2006 for 2005 and December 3rd for 2006. This was because we have advanced the Trophy Lunch in order to make awards directly relevant to the season just finished
• Roger and Dawn Jackaman again earned our sincere thanks for organising the traditional Christmas walk and lunch, which also became the Trophy Lunch this year. Roger also organises an annual lunch at New Scotland Yard in November and this year the lunch included awards for the prestigious White Jersey Series
• Mandy McDonnell organised a very enjoyable Italian night at the Al Forno in New Malden thanks Mandy.
• Gary Smith organised a very nice Thai curry night in Dorking
“Bottom Gear” - Voice of the SWRC
Tony Sayers manages to edit and produce “Bottom Gear” in between all the other invaluable things he does for the Club. “Bottom Gear” is a thoroughly good read issued at least twice per year, where all members have the chance to contribute their thoughts and experiences.
Press Coverage
Ant Frend has again done a great job as SWRC Press Secretary, getting our events into Cycling Weekly and the local press. Yours truly, SWRC Hon General Secretary has been shameless in passing on race results to Ant, who has added journalistic flourish to my news and got it into the local press.
Club Kit
Our SWRC club “strip” looks great and is still the most distinctive in the “peleton” so much so, that some members feel it is more difficult to make a break in road races because it stands out so well (anyway this is a good excuse). Simon Neave is in charge of a comprehensive list of club kit available to members at very reasonable (subsidised) prices. Simon is usually at the Club Room with kit on the first Tuesday of each month. Many thanks to Simon.
Other 2006 Activities
In addition to the activities noted already, your SWRC Committee has overseen the following:
• The SWRC Website has been completely updated and improved check it out, thanks to the Website Sub-Committee comprising Peter Wright, Tony Sayers, Ed Brown, Ant Frend & Mark Packman
• SWRC’s Trophies have been rationalised, and in some cases re-named, to make them relevant to current club activities. The result is a collection of truly magnificent silverware, as those who attended the Trophy Lunch can testify. These trophies have been donated by past club “greats” and we are very lucky to have them
• We are now the proud possessors of some very tall “wands” in SWRC colours, plus a “Gazebo” which add visibility and prestige to our events.
Charitable donations
In 2006 The SWRC made donations to:
• The Dave Rayner fund, which supports young promising cycling road race talent to get started (£100)
• Streetchild Africa (£50) in support of a sponsored ride made by Mike Wood
