Calendar of Events 2007

Every year the SWRC has a busy range of events and activities and 2006 is no exception. In addition to regular club runs and competitions the club organises two high profile cyclosportives every year, day trips away to cycling events in the UK and several trips abroad. Social activities include weekly evening club meetings as well as special lunches giving everyone the opportunity to get to know each other a little better.

March
The season kicks off with the SWRC Spring Cyclosportive on March 4th – organised by President Geoff Redhrad, this is a challenging 100 km jaunt through the lanes and hills of Surrey and Sussex. Riders from all over the south east take part and this years’ record numbers show how popular it has become.

On March 10th and 11th club riders take part in the annual “Training Weekend”, riding down to the coast on Saturday, spending the night in Eastbourne and riding back the next day. This gives us a chance to get some serious miles in before the summer sets in.

On March 17th, the club hosts its first R ‘n’ B music/party night in Fetcham with live bands and DJ’s (featuring various club members!). An evening to let your hair down (if you have any) and shake your booty…

On the 24th we will be heading down to the Calshott indoor track near Southampton with our indoor track specialist, Roger Jackaman, to try our hand at fixed-wheel track cycling around a (steeply) banked wooden oval – fast, furious and great fun.

April
At the end of April, one of our most popular events takes place - the annual week-long trip to the cycling mecca of Mallorca. Expertly run by Gary “Blobby” Smith, the club has been going there for over 20 years, staying in Puerto Pollensa in the North of the island. This year over 50 intrepid cyclists will be setting off to tackle the varied contours and terrain available on the island.

May
Our second CycloSportive of the year takes place on the 13th of May. This event, run by Tony Sayers and now in its eighth year, has been growing in popularity and offers cyclists the choice of two alternative distances – 50 miles and a tough 85 mile route down to Amberley in Sussex. Leaving from Cobham, this is promising to be the biggest and best yet!.

May to September there are 12 Club & Inter-Club Time Trials (with Epsom CC) - distances are 10 and 25 miles, 22kms and a 1 mile hill climb.

June
The Follicly Challenged LVRC race on 2nd June on the Kirdford circuit. Every year, the club organises and runs a leg of the LVRC championship for ‘veterans’. Several members compete in these events; indeed our very own Andy Hicks won his class in 2006 and became the ‘White Jersey’ champion.

Also in June, the individual Club Time Trial takes place on the 5th and the popular 2 UP series on 19th and 26th June. – these are all in the evenings on the Hungry Hill circuit, after which the competitors are usually found down the ‘local’ enjoying a well deserved pint..

At the end of June, a group of riders will be setting off for a week of cycling around Bordeaux

July
Gary Roubaix – A new event!
A 50 mile Randonee for road bikes leaving from Cobham which will involve about 20 miles of “rough stuff”! Standby for more details….

Club trip to Gran Fondo Pinarello on 15 July in Treviso organised by Dudley Samuels.

The club’s annual Hill Climb competition takes place on the 17th July up the challenging 1 mile climb at Ranmore.

On July 28th the ‘Century’ club ride takes place – a 100 mile trip down to the coast near Chichester and back (with at least 2 tea stops!).

September
30th Sept. The club organises and runs two road races event for the Surrey League Race series.

October
The Third Tapas Tour – this is a ‘long-weekend’ in Mallorca to get some late autumn sun during the last week of October. Led by ex-Mallorca resident Ant Frend, the trip gives members the chance to sample the challenging, mountains on the South West of the island (as well as sample the food and nightlife of the capital, Palma!).’.

November
Roger Jackaman is organising a trip to the Newport Velodrome for more fixed wheel racing bike action.
