Welcome to the South Western Road Club.

We are a friendly cycling club based in South West London with a membership of over 100 cyclists.

The active heart of the club is our Saturday club ride with a rotating three monthly list of the planned destinations, which take in the roads and lanes of Surrey, Sussex and Kent. There are also midweek rides and in the summer months an evening ride (chain gang) prior to our weekly Tuesday club night held in the Chessington area.

You are welcome to try us out on a club ride or a visit to our club night. Use this site to find out more about us and some of the things that we do in the Club.

SWRC ‘May Flyer’ Cyclosportive – Sunday 11th May, 2008 Start at 9.00 am.

This will be the 10th consecutive year we have run this event and, like our early season event, its popularity has increased each time it has taken place. There is a choice of two routes with the shorter 80km route ‘A’ meandering around the North Downs and a 140km route ‘B’ for the more energetic riders who will cross the North Downs on their way to Amberley in Sussex and return via a different string of mainly country lanes. Entry form here.....

The rides are reasonably challenging and some will enjoy the tough climb up Coombe Bottom (tackled by a different route on the outward and return legs) more than others, but all should enjoy the quiet country lanes of Surrey and Sussex. Both routes start from the public car park in Cobham, Surrey and are fully sign-posted. There are two intermediate ‘checks’ on the shorter route; one at Hydestyle (where the long and short routes split) and one at Ellens Green (where the long and short routes rejoin) where participants will get their ‘Brevit Cards’ signed. There is an additional check on the longer route near Bury as the route crosses the A29. Basic refreshments will be provided at the Hydestyle and Ellens Green checks. In addition, sandwiches and hot drinks will be available for purchase at the finish which, this year is located at Downside Village Hall, just over a mile from the car park, where there will be a chance to wind down and debrief your fellow cyclists before heading home. A ‘Broom Wagon’ will follow the last of the riders around the course in case it is required.

SWRC Ex-club president David Wright rides with James Cracknell on his way to Africa for Sport Relief.

Having seen on TV that James Cracknell was doing a mamouth row, cycle and swim challenge David started following his progress on the web. His route actually came within a mile of where he lives south of Bordeaux near Cadillac. He saw him cycle past and David joined him for a mile or 2. See details www.challengecracknell.com

David writes "Having seen James Cracknell on the road and cycled with him a couple of miles. I was going to go the whole distance, but as you can tell from the photos my sporting physic was not quite the same as his, and actually 2 miles was enough for me!!

We decided to follow his route in the car - as we had been planning a holiday in Spain this week. So we set off, and thanks to brilliant GPS we were able to cheer him on again on the route south of Madrid, and this afternoon on his arrival at Tarifa - the most southerly part of Spain.

He has done a fabulous job, is a lovely fella, and what he is doing for Sport Relief is Brilliant. He and his crew have been a pleasure to meet, and we would like to recommend anyone who is thinking of contributing to Sport Relief to please do so.

Tonight he is relaxing for the first time in a week with his wife and crew. Friday morning his is planning to set off, with David Walliams, to swim across the straights of Gibraltar."

SWRC Cyclosportive 24th February 2008

We hope those cyclists who completed our recent Cyclosportive on 24th February enjoyed the event. Well done to one and all. The weather was kind to us this year and, I’m sure the participants will agree, the route took them through some beautiful Surrey lanes. On a sadder note, we offer our wishes for a speedy recovery to the couple of fallers on the day.

The finishers’ times are listed here.... Some finishers forgot to collect their certificate at the end of the afternoon and if you contact us (or our organiser Dave Pinder direct) we will be happy to post your certificate on to you. If your name does not appear on the timings list, there may have been some query with your card and you should contact us as soon as possible so that we can resolve the query.

NEW CLUB KIT !!! NEW CLUB KIT!!! NEW CLUB KIT!!!

As you probably know, after 10 years of excellent service from our current kit, the Committee has agreed a new kit design and a new supplier. The new supplier, Kalas has been chosen by the Committee because it is geared to meeting the needs of clubs like ours, uses the latest technical fabrics and provides garments with improved cut and quality versus our current kit. With our sponsorship from Evans Cycles most of the kit is being offered at a substantial discount to its cost price. Manufacturer’s kit samples will be available to try for size on club nights of the 4th and 11th March, when you can also place your order. The new club kit design can also be viewed here

Important information for ordering the new club kit

• Club kit can only be supplied to paid up club members.

• We are not expecting to place another order until September/October (winter kit).

• The expected large order for new kit will put pressure on club finances therefore we will require pre-payment with each order. No payment – no order.

• We will only be holding limited stocks of short sleeve jerseys and shirts. If you want other items you will need to place an order now.

• Do not guess your size! Read the Kalas size guide, measure yourself and follow the sizing charts.

• For the first time we are able to offer a Ladies cut, which should be specified on the order form

Closing date for kit orders to Simon Neave is Sat. 15 Mar

The Kalas catalogue can be viewed at http://www.kalaswear.com/doc/Catalogue_Uk_Kalas_07.pdf.

A letter is in the post to all club members with an order form for the new kit, which can also be found here....

John Bromley, a previous Club President, died suddenly on Saturday 16 Febraury. John was on his Mountain Bike near Headley Common when he died. Bob Maylin pays a tribute to him here and Colin Parkinson has also placed another tribute on the SWRC Blog.

John joined the South Western around 1957 together with a group of his friends from Putney Vale. This was an era when the club had very strong racing teams and a full social programme which he enthusiastically supported, making friendships that would last a lifetime.

His early racing included some club time trials, open cyclo-cross events and, of course, road racing. As he progressed through the senior ranks, and the B.L.R.C. became the B.C.F., his racing successes gained him a first category license. He also competed at National level in cyclo-cross events. During this period he developed his elegant, seemingly effortless, pedalling style which never left him.

He also made racing trips to Quimper in Brittany to compete on the “Pardon" circuit and finding time to act as ‘stoker’ in some tandem 30mile time trials at home.

Work and other interests damped down but never extinguished his love of racing. He always took a keen interest in the administration of the club and was eventually elected president.

It was about at this time that the continental sportive events were coming to the notice of the general British club rider. In 1995, a group of about ten or so decided to enter the biggest of them all, La Marmotte. The 160 km route passed over the Col de la Croix de Fer, the Col de Telegraph, the Col de Galibier, most of the Alpe d'Huez climb and the finishing ascent to Vaujany, 5000m of climbing. The variation in temperatures that day were extreme, between 30 degrees in the valleys and about 5 degrees on the summits with strong winds. Our first retirements came on the Telegraph approaching the Galibier. A fair number of us called it a day at Bourg d'Oisans but John and his fellow president of the Kingston Wheelers, John Bornhof rode up the Alpe together and on to Vaujany. A truly epic ride.

John will never be forgotten by those that knew him and the Club is truly privileged to have counted him as one of its number.

Saturday Club Rides - New C group

We now run “C Group” Saturday rides in order to provide an opportunity for club members and new riders to join a ride at a more modest pace and distance than generally undertaken by the A and B Groups. Start is at 0930 at Cobham car park, as for the other groups, allowing people to choose their ride on the day.

However, note that the C Group always starts from Cobham and does not change to a Betchworth start on the first Saturday of each month. Distance will generally be 30-40 miles at a pace that keeps everyone together and avoids the steeper hills. A tea stop is also scheduled for each ride to keep energy levels up! The club runs list shows the destination, so all you have to do is turn up at the start. We want members to spread the word once they have tried the ride and it will become the ride of choice for those looking for a more relaxed outing. Come and give it a try! .

New 50 mile club TT record

Colin Parkinson has beaten the club 50 mile time trial record. He writes:

The evening before I rode the Headnor Clarion 10 on the A50 based near Hilton in 21.06 for 7th place on the day a 4 second beating of my time from 1982 (the day Dave Lloyd did comp record 19.11 on the Q10/19 and beat Sean Yates by a min!). I was at 10.20 at five miles and I thought a sub 21 minute would be a certainty but when i came to bury myself in the last two miles I bottled it a bit knowing I had the 50 the next day and didn't go as hard as I should have. The following morning in the Finsbury event on the A1 I managed a 1.53.28 to take 3 minutes off my time from 1983, and a 5 min improvement on last year's time. I did the second 25 faster than the first (57.04) still feeling the effects of the previous nights efforts and the long drive to Bedford in the morning. No aero bars then of course 25 years ago and I still think the 1.55.21 a better ride in those days. This is also seven seconds faster than the current Club Record.

Time Trials >> South Western Road Club hold a programme of time trialling events (racing against the clock) throughout the season from March to September.  The programme includes a series of evening events open to club members , including a hill climb and a series of inter-club events held jointly with Epsom CC. ...more Upcoming Dates For Your Diary >>
